Climate change is one of the most significant challenges to global economic development. Left unchecked, continued global warming could cause worldwide social and environmental disruption. The Asia and Pacific region is more vulnerable to climate change risks than other regions due to its dependence on the natural resources and agriculture sectors.

Densely populated coastal areas, weak institutions, and the poverty of a considerable proportion of its population add to the susceptibility of this region. Adaptation—making adjustments in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climate stimuli— becomes a key strategy for sustaining economic growth.
